Image Processing. What do I do to my images?

In this example I have selected a picture I took in Queensland. I like this image but before I draw it I have to process it using Photoshop or some other Paint package. GIMP is a good free PC package that has a lot of functionality.
At this point all I have done is converted it to Grayscale using a Filter in Photoshop. I do like it as it is but I want it to be a darker image than this so I am going to process it some more.

This is the final processed image and the one I will draw. I have added 2 layers of the image on top of the original and set the first layer above to Screen, (this brings out all of the lights and whites) then on the next layer I have set it to multiply this increases the blacks and gives it a really dark feel.
This is my preference, but everyone’s taste is different...
